The Memory of Philomelium in First Crusade Narratives

Resumen

Este artículo reconsidera un momento clave en las complejas historias entrelazadas de Bizancio y las Cruzadas: la retirada del emperador Alejo I Comneno de Filomelio a finales de junio de 1098, tal como fue representada en las narrativas latinas de la Primera Cruzada. La historiografía ha sostenido con frecuencia que esta retirada marcó un punto de inflexión en la percepción cruzada de Bizancio, fomentando un sentimiento antibizantino y hostilidad hacia Alejo. Este estudio reevalúa dicha afirmación, cuestionando si los acontecimientos en Filomelio provocaron por sí mismos la oleada de sentimiento anti-alejiano propuesta por la investigación previa. Sostiene, en cambio, que fue la aparente falta de respuesta de Alejo a la embajada cruzada enviada a finales de julio o principios de agosto de 1098 lo que configuró la memoria posterior de la retirada. Ante la ausencia de una respuesta imperial o de una acción decisiva, ciertos cruzados y cronistas comenzaron a reinterpretar retroactivamente la retirada en un tono más negativo. Al distinguir entre la reacción inmediata y el juicio retrospectivo, este artículo ofrece una reconsideración de los mecanismos por los cuales la decepción, el silencio y la expectativa dieron lugar a una narrativa duradera de traición.
