Abstract

This article analyses two thirteenth-century historiographical works, the Estoria de los godos and the Sumario Analístico by focusing on three thematic sections from Alfonso VI’s reign that feature Constance and Zaida. Comparison of these passages with their Latin source, De rebus Hispaniae, and contemporary historiography reveals their compositional tendencies. Since the specific features observed are in line with the impulses from the final period of Alfonso’s reign, a courtly-ecclesiastical environment is suggested as responsible for or favourable to these Romance rewritings. This hypothesis, complementary to the criticism put foward in recent years, offers alternative readings of the tendencies examined, while appreciating the internal differences between the Estoria de los godos and the Sumario Analístico.
