Ecclesiam tiranizaret: The Uses of Ecclesiastical and Religious Arguments in Royal Depositions in Late Medieval Castile.

This article aims to examine the various uses of ecclesiastical and religious arguments in the episodes of royal depositions in late medieval Castile. It focuses on three main aspects: the use of those arguments for political criticism and delegitimisation of the deposed monarchs; their application in the apology for and legitimisation of the alternative candidate to the throne and his political project; and their capitalisation as instruments of adherence and political mobilisation. The analysis will show that the use of this type of arguments served not only to provide theoretical and justificatory support for the initiatives against the reigning kings, but also to engage and involve the clergy, the group most affected by them, in the political conflict.
