Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse the figure and memory of Saint Ot, bishop of Urgell (1095-1123), through the lens of warrior saintliness. By analysing different kinds of sources (hagiographic, documentary, iconographic, etc.), especially two vitae and a banner associated with the bishop, it is possible to put forward hypotheses and conclusions regarding the probable militarisation of this prelate’s identity. This revision of his hagiographic profile took place within the framework of the tension between conciliar theory, contrary to the participation of clerics and monks in the violence of the period, and the practical reality of societies intrinsically linked to war. To overcome this contradiction, various narrative strategies were used in two hagiographical texts, and a material element to complement this discourse was produced: the so-called «banner of Saint Ot».
