Otherness in the margins. Symbolic imaginaries of the Gorgades islands in medieval texts and maps (ninth-fifteenth centuries)

In order to understand the medieval worldview, it is essential to consider the symbolism of certain geographical references. In this respect, the mythical and ambiguous nature of the Atlantic islands is one of the most defining elements in the way the Middle Ages described, represented and understood the world. The descriptions of ocean islands and archipelagos, both in texts and in maps, shed light not only on geographical information, but also on the inheritance of Antiquity and some specific medieval worldviews. This paper analyses the referential development of the Gorgades islands in medieval texts and maps. Thus, it will be shown how these islands, through their westernmost location and the liminal nature of the race of women that inhabit them, imply a geographical context which is marked by a marginal otherness which was key for the way the world was understood in the Middle Ages.
