Abstract

In the year of 1212, Monteada family obtained the control from the Baix Segre area, one of the most densely inhabited in Islamic times. Two centuries later, in spite of the deep implantation of the feudal system, the Muslim community did not only conserved a strong presence, but it kept also alive a big portion of its institutions. This community -organized in aljames- was concentrated in the villages of Aitona, Seròs and Mequinensa, where it constituted the most important part of its population. This tension between the ancient and the new setting of relationships where this community is involved (materialized in contracts like the emfiteusi) gives to this area a singular tint.
