In 1341, a Venetian ambassade arrived at Clarenza in order to meet the only Empress in name latin, Catherine de Valois, who was with her son Robert in Morea, so as to consolidate her power. The reason of the diplomatic mission was the continuous protestations made by the Venetians against the intollerance and and the erosion of their ancient commercial privileges. The objectives of the ambassade were no only to demand a compensation but, above all, to ask for the reaffirmation of the merchants'privileges by the new lords of the Principate.
