Abstract

The seles are private spaces surrounded by mountain areas and communal forest. This article suggests that they are evidence of the appropriation of forest and mountain spaces by the powerful. The seles also serve as an excellent guide to orientate the study of the utilization of those spaces. Taking as its reference the seles of Guipúzcoa, this article reflects on the processes of individualization and appropriation of mountain and forest spaces, as well as their utilization from the 14th to the 16th centuries. It is structured into three parte: the formal characteristics of the seles, their ownership, and the forms of transfer and development. Finally, the evolution of each of these three aspects during the period indicated is considered.
