This article analyzes the Sermons of the Venetian Clarissian nun Chiara Bugni (1471-1514) based on a recent edition of the Libro della beata Chiara, composed in the mid-sixteenth century. The sermons document the practice of the preaching of the abbess of the monastery and they are distinct from the visions and revelations affi rmed in the Vita composed by her confessor. This confi rms a double function of feminine preaching: that of the prophetess, oriented outward, and that of an ex officio kind of a hortatory and pastoral character.
