This article analyzes the reasons for the increasing importance of culture in the relations among the principal Iberian kingdoms throughout the 15th century. During this period, when the institutions of the different monarchies grew in strength, ambassadors were considered emanations of royal authority and representatives of the court of their country. While at the same time they were expected to have technical, and above all juridical knowledge, in order to adequately carry out their diplomatic tasks.
