Abstract

The history of the Templars convent of Tortosa ends practically with the Exchange which the Templars concluded in 1294 with Jaume 11 by which they ceded their dominion over the city. However, an exhaustive study of documents of the Temple shows that the Templars continued in possession of an extensive heritage in the city and surroundings of Tortosa.
Analysis and comparison of the Templar and Hospital documental sources allow us to place quite a few of the sites they kept, among which were some signal towers such as the one in Prat, Quinto, Burjassénia, etc. The subsidiary utility to the castles of these towers in the defence of the territory has been thoroughly studied; the novelty lies in adscribing them to the Order of the Temple and the architectural evaluation of the buildings.
