For more than a century, many researchers in History of Law have studied the text of the "Costum" of Valencia, trying to discover who was its author, what were its documentary sources, how it was composed and organized, and when it was published.
All these questions have brief but concise answers in this article, where they are analyzed, and attention is drawn to the importance of the "Corpus iuris civilis", the "Liber iudicum", the "Usatges" from Barcelona and the "Consuetudines ilerdenses", as the main documentary sources of the "Costum" of Valencia. Finally the date proposed for its publication is around the 1st November, 1238.
