The foundation of the Carmelite house in Vallparadís, Terrassa in 1413 seems to have been an ill-fated attempt by some friars to return to a more contemplative way of life. The only extant documents suggest that the venture was costly in a number of ways, causing ill-feeling between the friars at Terrassa and their superiors in the Province of Catalonia. The experiment only lasted until 1431, but it was indicative of the dichotomy which existed within the Order al that time. In brief, the short life of the house of Vallparadís was fraught with difficulty and conflict, but its establishment was a significant step towards reform by those who could not forget the eremitical origina of the Order.
