Abstract

Search about the relationship of the royal power and the cities which depended on the first one directly (realengo), for four centuries, since the age of the reconquista, with a special attention to the great improvements happenned between 1250 and 1350: promotion of the urban chivalry, formation of lineages and bandos, regimientos, superiority of the royal laws on the local ones, presence of royal judges and corregidores. The second part of the article treats of the political relationship between the cities, the crown and the high nobility, and explains its influence in the structures and working of the cities government institutions during the Trastamara age (1369-1474) and the reign of the Reyes Católicos (1474-1515), who could strengthen durably the royal authority over the model of town power developed in the late middle ages.
