A Logical Question in a Sermon of Saint Vincent Ferrer. The Treatise De suppositionibus as an Interpretative Tool

In the sermons of Saint Vinc ent Ferrer, references to philosophical questions occupy a secondary, subordinate position to the moral message. However, they are quite frequent and show his high level of scholastic training. In one of the sermons we fi nd an insert that explains an apparent grammatical anomaly in a biblical passage: a brief explanation that makes sense drawing on the content of the treatise on the suppositions of the terms written by Saint Vicent during his years of training as a teacher of logic. This proves that his sermons cannot be fully understood without taking into account the philosophical doctrines that support theological discourse.
