Paper-cut letters, words made of light and divine embroideries: towards and aestrhetic of wondrous writing in the Middle Ages

In the mid-fourteenth century Rabbi Shem Tov of Carrión wrote his Debate between the Pen and the Scissors, a text in which the two tools confront each other aiming to prove their superiority as writing instruments. In this context the practicality of the Pen faces the beauty of paper-cut calligraphy, a script so extraordinary that it is described as «writing of wonder». In this paper the aesthetic ideas addressed by the Scissors are analysed and connected to other wondrous writings, like the words made of light painted on mosque lamps or the divine embroideries described by Gonzalo de Berceo and Mechthild of Magdeburg.
