The aim of this article is to study the question of wheat scarcity in Barcelona during the reign of Alphonse the Benign. Different aspects are boarded, such as: reasons of the endemic wheat shortage in Barcelona, the cerealistic policy established by the Crown and by the city Council, the routes of wheat arrival, different means that the Barcelona Council used so that merchants were interested in introducing cereal into the city, prices of cereals, kinds and qualities of cereals, weights and measures, the regulation on cereals proceeded from the Council, public officials whose role was to control cereals and flours in Barcelona.
