The Journal publishes one yearly volume divided into two half-yearly issues. The first issue (published in June) has a monographic character while the second one (published in December) is miscellaneous. The Journal also includes a bibliographic section (with book reviews, bibliographical notes, books received) and, occasionally, an obituary section of eminent deceased medievalists whose life and work have been related to the Journal. The languages supported are: Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, French, Italian and English.

Founded in 1964 by Prof. Emilio Sáez, it began to be available online in 2007, in PDF format, maintaining printed edition until 2024. That year it became an electronic journal publishing in PDF, HTML and XML-JATS. Contents of previous issues are also available in PDF files.
